Emotions can push us to do and say things that we wouldn’t normally do.

They can elicit powerful responses.

What we do with those responses is up to us.

When those emotions include money, most of us look outward and try to find something external to blame for why we feel like we do. Who did what? Why did they do it? Etc.

We’ve been trained to blame someone or something else for the way we get triggered.

We rarely want to believe it’s US (self) that is the issue.

If you want more control over your finances and less stress in your money relationship (regardless of the number in your bank account), you must turn inward.

MINDSET: Our reaction is giving us insight into the lens we’re using to view the world. It’s pointing out our “truth” (whether that truth is healthy or not). Our job as NextGen Millionaires is to CHALLENGE the truth we’re being shown. What is REALLY true? What is a lie? What examples can we find that show our “truth” is actually false? Keep digging and ask for help if you get stalled.

TRAUMA: Our bodies are responding to our truth (even if it’s false). A trauma response is instinctual and visceral, so we need to approach our trauma with compassion and care. One thing we can do is help our bodies to calm down so we can feel into the situation instead of reacting to it. Is this situation really as dangerous as we feel? Usually it isn’t.

CULTURAL: What words and perspectives are coming from our family or community? How might culture be fueling our emotional response? How might it be gaslighting us? Think about times you’ve witnessed others going through similar situations. What was the cultural reaction to them? Are the emotions you’re experiencing right now even yours?

The emotional response to money is very real. The more we work on identifying why we’re feeling what we feel and where it came from, the better we get at healing those past wounds.

We then can approach tough situations with more love and compassion for ourselves and a clearer understanding of what we want to do to resolve whatever is going on.

When we make it about us in a way that challenges our beliefs, we break down those old stories and create new, healthier ones.
